Conners’ Continuous Performance Test II (CPT II)

The CPT II is a task-based computerized assessment of attention disorders and neurological functioning. Results from the CPT II can clarify the nature of attention deficits, quickly identifying problems with impulsiveness, activation/arousal, or vigilance, for example. Administered in educational, psychiatric, medical, and correctional settings, the CPT II can be used to screen for or diagnose ADHD, monitor treatment, test the effects of medication, or determine optimal drug dosage.
New to Version 5 are two very convenient options: minimizing false positives and minimizing false negatives. The former option is useful when you want only very strong evidence of ADHD in order to avoid unnecessary follow-up evaluation. The latter is helpful when you want to identify as many potential attention problems as possible.
Appropriate for individuals aged 6 years and up, the CPT II presents target letters on a computer screen. The examinee’s task is to press the space bar or click the mouse whenever any letter other than “X” appears. Letters are displayed for 250 milliseconds, at 1-, 2-, and 4-second intervals. Administration time is 14 minutes.

T-scores and percentile ranks are also provided, in relation to both nonclinical and ADHD samples.
The program generates three kinds of reports: one summarizing results from individual administrations; one comparing results from several administrations to the same subject; and the third comparing results to scores from the Conners’ Rating Scales, Revised (CRS-R) and the Conners’ Adult ADHD Rating Scales (CAARS).
Normative data are based on results from 2,686 subjects. Of these, 378 were diagnosed with ADHD, 223 had other neuropsychological problems, and 1,920 were classified as nonclinical.
The CPT II is an unlimited-use program, so you can administer and score the test as often as you wish. To use the software on multiple computers, however, you must purchase additional installations.
Conners’ Kiddie Continuous Performance Test (K-CPT)
Version 5 for Windows
Based on the CPT II: Version 5, this program assesses attention problems in 4- and 5-year-olds. Adapted to the needs of young children, it uses pictures of everyday objects (rather than letters) as on-screen stimuli. In addition, display times and stimulus intervals are longer. (Objects appear on screen for 500 milliseconds, at intervals of 1.5 and 3.0 seconds.) Half the length of the original program, the K-CPT can be completed in just 7.5 minutes.
Testing procedure, information generated, and options offered are the same as those for the CPT II, described above. And, like the CPT II, the K-CPT is an unlimited-use program. It offers Single Administration Reports as well as Multiple Administration Reports that allow you to compare results from two to four administrations on the same child. Normative data are based on a sample of 454 children, aged 4 and 5. Of these, 314 were classified as nonclinical, 100 were considered clinical with ADHD, and 40 were categorized as clinical without ADHD.
The K-CPT can be used to supplement information from physicians, teachers, family members, or other assessment tools such as the Conners’ Rating Scales, Revised (CRS-R). It’s an ideal way to implement the multimodal assessment approach emphasized by the DSM-IV.
