Edmark Reading Program – Level 2 Complete Program
TARGET GROUP: Grades 1 through 3
The Edmark Reading Program, Level 2 print version is an extension of Level 1 for students who have successfully completed Level 1 but are not yet ready for a more traditional reading approach. Level 2 continues to provide students with one-on-one teacher-to-student lessons.
Level 2 introduces 200 new words including compound words, as well as reviewing and reinforcing words introduced in Level 1. It introduces new graphics and two adolescent characters, Judy and Scott, who are the focus of real-life situation stories. The Story Books include 100 illustrated stories. Picture/Phrase Card lessons represent a broad diversity of people, role models, and settings.
Comprehension questions focus on students’ attention on the meaning within the stories. At ten-word intervals, review and test activities are provided allowing teachers to test student knowledge of the words they are learning. Short instructional steps, repetition, and constant positive reinforcement build self-confidence in the student.
A Teacher’s Guide provides learning objectives, classroom activity ideas, and research references. Student Record Books assist teachers in tracking student progress throughout the program.
Learning Opportunities
Word Recognition Lessons
Students learn 200 new words and reinforce words learned in level 1. This lesson pairs the spoken word with the printed word until students can easily identify the printed word itself.
Picture/Phrase Card Lessons
Students review three to five illustrations, in a left-to-right comic strip sequence. Descriptive phrase cards must be correctly matched to the illustrations to check understanding of words and improve discrimination and sequencing skills.
Story Book Lessons
Stories are composed of 200 level 2 words in addition to review words learned in Level 1. In this story format, students explore the activities of Judy and Scott, two adolescent-aged characters. These portrayals of real-life situations increase student involvement and provide valuable reading practice.
