The PLSS is a must-have for kindergarten screening. This individually administered assessment can be given in 10 to 15 minutes. It identifies incoming kindergarten children who may be at risk for literacy failure. It provides an early look at phonological awareness, word retrieval, and letter recognition. The PLSS includes nine subtests:

 Rhyme
 Sentence Repetition
 Naming
 Blending
 Sentence Segmentation
 Letter Naming
 Syllable Segmentation
 Deletion
 Multisyllabic Word Repetition

You’ll find interpreting PLSS results simple and straightforward. Identify your at-risk students by selecting the lowest 20% of the students screened. Data collected informally with this screening protocol indicate good accuracy in predicting children who will encounter difficulty learning to read. School districts using this screening are able to begin intervention in kindergarten. They do not wait for failure.
