Preschool Motor Speech Evaluation & Intervention

This manual is the most comprehensive resource you’ll find for evaluating and treating oral motor and motor speech disorders in young children ages 18 months to six years (older if developmentally delayed). You’ll even have strategies for nonverbal and preverbal children.

The heart of this program is the Preschool Motor Speech Evaluation. This criterion-based assessment is designed to differentiate motor-based speech disorders from phonological disorders. The test is separated into observations of typical development as well as atypical observations. By examining the pattern of atypical observations, you’ll be able to identify whether speech difficulties are characteristic of hyper- or hyposensitivity, tone differences, dysarthria, oral nonverbal apraxia, or developmental verbal apraxia.

A treatment section describes goals, principles of therapy, and suggested treatment activities and materials for each of the five disorders above. You’ll also be able to maximize parent involvement with the 7-stage Parent Assisted Intervention Program. Several reproducible handouts are provided. Handouts explain what has been accomplished so far and what the goal for the next stage is so that parents recognize the increments of progress that are often overlooked.
The final chapter addresses how to plan and run a preschool-style group for youngsters with oral and motor speech disorders. You’ll have suggestions for incorporating motor speech drill into circle time, snack time, free play, and arts and crafts. There are even suggestions for snacks that promote oral motor practice.
The premier guide of its time, this book is a must for anyone who needs to know more about motor speech disorders. The assessment form in the book  is reproducible. Objects for the test are not included and need to be gathered in order to give the test.
