Use of Raven’s Progressive Matrices will provide an indication of an individual’s ability to

interpret abstract problems and make sense of complex information. Candidates must

identify solutions to incomplete patterns, requiring the need to generate and apply rules to a

series of items.

The Raven’s is available in three versions suitable for the occupational setting:

Raven’s Advanced Progressive Matrices (APM) contains items designed to assess

people of above average intelligence and is suitable for selection of high-level technical and

managerial positions.

The APM contains two tests:

Set I, with 12 problems, used as a practice or screening test

Set II, a 36 problem series that is always administered with Set I.

Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices (SPM) is suitable for the general population

in an organisational setting. It has a total of 60 items presented in 5 sets (A–E), with 12

items per set.

Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices Plus (SPM-plus) offers greater discrimination

between candidates performing at the top end of the ability scale, while also retaining the

60-item format.

Mill Hill Vocabulary Scales (MHV)

A verbal compliment to Raven’s offering insight into the ability to store, process and utilise a

culture’s store of information.
