Non-verbal reasoning for making sense of complex information
Use of Raven’s Progressive Matrices will provide an indication of an individual’s ability to
interpret abstract problems and make sense of complex information. Candidates must
identify solutions to incomplete patterns, requiring the need to generate and apply rules to a
series of items.
The Raven’s is available in three versions suitable for the occupational setting:
Raven’s Advanced Progressive Matrices (APM) contains items designed to assess
people of above average intelligence and is suitable for selection of high-level technical and
managerial positions.
The APM contains two tests:
• Set I, with 12 problems, used as a practice or screening test
• Set II, a 36 problem series that is always administered with Set I.
Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices (SPM) is suitable for the general population
in an organisational setting. It has a total of 60 items presented in 5 sets (A–E), with 12
items per set.
Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices Plus (SPM-plus) offers greater discrimination
between candidates performing at the top end of the ability scale, while also retaining the
60-item format.
