Self-Directed Search® Form R: 4th Edition (SDS® R)
John L. Holland, PhD

.

A majority of college students change their major at least once in their college careers; many change their decision several times during their years in college. All of these changes, while valuable in terms of personal growth and development, are often costly in terms of time and dollars spent. The SDS can help students examine their interests, abilities, and values, and then choose the course of study that is most appropriate for them.

The SDS is a simulated career counseling experience. Based on Dr. John L. Holland’s RIASEC theory that both people and work environments can be classified according to six basic types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional (RIASEC), the SDS enables individuals to choose careers and fields of study that best match their self-reported skills and interests. Extensive research has shown that people whose job and work environments most closely match their personal style and interests tend to consider themselves satisfied and successful with the occupational choices they have made.

The SDS Form R is an easy-to-use, comprehensive career exploration tool that allows people to gain insight into the world of work and, with their new self-understanding, discover an occupational “match.” Individuals answer questions about their aspirations, activities, competencies, occupations, and other self-estimates and discover occupations that best fit their interests and skills.

Yields a 3-letter Summary Code that designates the three personality types an individual most closely resembles.
Normative data derived from a nationally representative sample of 2,602 students and working adults.

SDS Form R Components

Form R Assessment Booklets consist of several sections: Occupational Daydreams, SDS Scales and Rating, How To Organize Your Answers, What Your Summary Code Means, Some Next Steps, and Some Useful Books.
Occupations Finder and Alphabetized Occupations Finder now include occupations that have emerged as a result of technological advances (e.g., Internet). The booklets also provide the educational development level each occupation requires and the associated Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT) code.
You and Your Career Booklets explain the typology of the six personality types. This booklet also deals with some common interpretive problems faced by test-takers.
Leisure Activities Finder Booklets list over 700 leisure activities according to a 2-letter Summary Code. It is designed to help in career, retirement, and leisure planning.
Educational Opportunities Finder Booklets list 750 post-secondary fields of study by Holland code. Helps students relate Holland codes to education and training options.
The SDS Technical Manual describes the history of the SDS, development of the 4th edition, and research and technical information about all four forms of the SDS (R, E, CP, and Career Explorer).
The SDS Professional User’s Guide provides complete practical information about the four forms of the SDS, including a description of the theory underlying the SDS; guidelines for administration and scoring of SDS materials; ideas for basic and supplementary interpretation, counselor training, and practical applications of SDS results.
