TEMAS (Tell-Me-A-Story)
by Giuseppe Costantino, Ph.D., Robert G. Malgady, Ph.D., and Lloyd H. Rogler, Ph.D.

This unique, multicultural apperception test is an effective way to screen both minority and nonminority children for emotional and behavior problems. It can uncover diagnostically relevant information in a wide range of children–and recent studies have shown that TEMAS has therapeutic value as well. Storytelling in response to TEMAS cards has been successfully used as an intervention to treat fear, anxiety, and conduct problems.
Developed specifically for children and adolescents from 5 to 18 years of age, TEMAS features attractive, full-color stimulus cards. It is available in two parallel forms, one designed for minority children, the other for nonminority children. Each form includes 23 cards, 11 of which are sex-specific. The minority cards show predominantly Hispanic and Black individuals, while the nonminority cards depict mostly nonminority characters. The pictures reflect both positive and negative emotions and interactions. An Administration Instruction Card is available to guide the test administrator while giving the test.
In addition to full-color stimulus cards, Tell-Me-A-Story (TEMAS) offers an objective scoring system and normative data based on a sample of more than 600 children (ages 5 to 13 years) from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
The test measures 10 Personality Functions, 18 Cognitive Functions, and 7 Affective Functions:
Personality
Affective
Cognitive
Based on over 10 years of research and clinical findings, this exciting measure answers the need for a psychometrically sound, culturally relevant apperception test for children.
