Summary
The Interest Explorer is a career guidance and counseling instrument designed to help students make wise educational and career-planning decisions. Specifically, it provides information about students’ interests in 14 career areas that are directly linked to the most recent publications of the Department of Labor, including the Guide for Occupational Exploration (GOE).
Students respond to a number of activity-related statements representing a wide range of occupations. These statements survey students’ preferences in careers, school subject areas, and general opportunities (such as working with others). The Interest Explorer is designed to assist all students in developing more awareness about how their interests relate to future education and to possible careers.
Levels
Level 1 of the Interest Explorer is designed to be used with students in junior high (grades 8—9) to help them with introductory career exploration and high school course selection. When an interest inventory is given at this level, it can help students establish educational goals. Students who have goals at an early age tend to remain in school longer. They also can begin to understand that there is a connection between what they study in school and the world of work. Items for Level 1 are written at a fifth grade (maximum) reading level.
Level 2 is designed to be used with students in high school (grades 9—12), and provides them with an opportunity for advanced career exploration. It is also designed to help them make decisions for future education based on a more specific understanding of themselves and the world of work. Items for Level 2 are also written at a fifth grade (maximum) reading level.
Administration
Designed to be used in conjunction with the Iowa Tests of Educational Development, Interest Explorer is designed for group administration and requires less than one class period.
